PSAT/NMSQT

The Preliminary-SAT (PSAT)/National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test (NMSQT) is a diagnostic assessment for all 10th and 11th grade students that gives them practice for the SAT® and helps identify their academic strengths and weaknesses, aligned to the Rhode Island Grade Span Expectations. This gives our students, their parents, and their teachers an understanding of the instructional focus they need in order to prepare for success in college. For these reasons, RIDE and the Governor's Office proposed that each public high school in Rhode Island test all 10th and 11th grade students.

Each student that participates will have access to an individual student score report, explanations for each test question, a personalized SAT Study Plan and free access to My College QuickStart, the College Board's career, major, and college planning tool through through www.collegeboard.com/quick. Each school will receive a school summary report that will be mailed within two months of the test administration date. College Board staff can work with school leadership teams to promote the systematic use of the PSAT/NMSQT's Summary of Answers and Skills and AP Potential tool. The Summary of Answer and Skills provides detailed information on the skills covered on each item of the PSAT/NMSQT, also showing how students' skills compare to national and state performance on each critical reading, math, and writing skill assessed by test. AP Potentialalso helps to identify students who have the potential to earn a grade of 3, 4, or 5 on various AP exams, based on their PSAT/NMSQT performance.

Update for 2009-10 School Year:

The PSAT/NMSQT for grades 10 and 11 will not be paid for by RIDE this year due to budget cuts. Hopefully RIDE will be able to resume providing all 10th and 11th grade students with this opportunity the following year. If you wish to continue to offer the PSAT/NMSQT to all students,  The College Board will work with your school or district to provide a possible discounted rate, as well as the following services:
