Achieve Algebra II

introduction

Rhode Island participated in the development of this exam in consortium with 13 other states.  In the Fall of 2007 15 Rhode Island schools administered the Algebra II field test to students who completed an Algebra II course.  The first operational administration of this exam will take place in May of 2008.  The State is assuming the cost associated with the administration of the test, the scoring, and the reporting to any school district that has decided to participate in the assessment.

Released Items

Pearson and Achieve have completed the released item document for the American Diploma Project (ADP) Algebra II End of Course Exam. The purpose behind the released items is to offer insight into the format and expectations of the exam.  All the items being released have been field tested and have been reviewed by both content and data review committees.  These items will not appear on an operational test. Ten items are being released this year, including multiple choice and short answer responses.  As with the NECAP assessment, some of the items allow the use of a calculator while for other items a calculator is not allowed.  Additional items will be released as operational tests continue.

The released items begin with a “sample test”   format which is then followed by a repeat of each item with the correct response and or samples of correct solutions. Unlike NECAP, there is no student work with annotations but rather a commentary that includes the ADP mathematics benchmark that the item addresses, distracter analysis for the multiple choice questions, and instructional implications solutions for each item.

This document can be used in ways similar to the suggestions for NECAP resources:

  • Embed individual items to align instruction and assessment activities
  • Discuss the sample solutions
  • Analyze the items and commentary with students and colleagues
