Basic Education Program (BEP)
In June of 2009, the Rhode Island
Board of Regents for Elementary and
Secondary Education approved new
Basic Education Program (BEP)
Regulations. These regulations
replace the previous BEP revised in
1989. The new BEP is updated to
reflect 21st century knowledge,
skills and dispositions. It
incorporates all state and federal
laws, regulations and standards.
Though pared from over 400 pages to
just over 40, the BEP is the framing
document for RIDE and all school
districts. The document is broken
down by:
-
RI Board of Regents Expectations
for a statewide education
system, for the Rhode Island
Department of Education, and for
Local Education Agencies
-
Curriculum, Instruction and
Assessment
-
Safe, Healthy and Supportive
Learning Environment
-
Administration, Management and
Accountability of the Local
Education Agency (LEA)
| The Basic Education Program (BEP) provides a framework within
which a decision can be made about whether a school district is offering
its students a basic education program, including academic and support
programs. There are standards for each topic and companion indicators
which will tell educators, decision makers, and others whether that
component is available. These regulations went into effect on July
1, 2010. |
