RHODE ISLAND REQUIREMENTS FOR ATHLETIC COACH
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

Chapter 16-11-1.1 of the General Laws of Rhode Island requires that all athletic coaches be properly certified PRIOR to being employed in an educational setting which requires certification.

  1. COMPLETE APPLICATION FORM: Please TYPE or PRINT. All questions must be answered accurately and completely. Entry of false information could result in denial or revocation of your certificate.

  2. CERTIFICATION PROCESSING FEE: A money order or personal check for $25.00, payable to the GENERAL TREASURER, State of Rhode Island, must accompany each application. No application will be evaluated without the fee. THE FEE IS NON-REFUNDABLE.

  3. DOCUMENTATION: Attach a copy of the FRONT and BACK of your first aid card showing you completed a Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety course, (formerly Standard First Aid) OR Sports Safety Training First Aid basics within 3 years of the date of application.

OR

Attach an official record of one of the following courses (completed within 3 years of the date of application) approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education:

  • Course entitled "Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries"

  • EMT (photocopy of current card/license)

  • Physician (photocopy of current license)

  • Nurse (photocopy of current card/license)

  • Sports Medicine First Aid

  • Sport Safety Training with Adult and Child CPR

  • First Responder course - American Medical Response of Massachusetts

  • National Safety Council First Aid Institute

  • EMP America - Medic First Aid

  • Outdoor Emergency Care (formerly Winter Emergency Care) - National Ski Patrol

  • URI-Lifeguard Corps Basic First Aid and CPR Course

  • American Red Cross Emergency Response Course #3216

  • Public Safety Specialist - Basic First Aid

  • Health Care Provider - American Heart Association - Standard First Aid/CPR

  • American Heart Association - HS/FACTS Program
