Description
Mentors are an important part of successful exhibitions. They are individuals with expertise in the area in which a student has chosen to work. Mentors can provide a number of important opportunities for students doing exhibitions, including real-world experience in an area of specialized interest, vocational or professional guidance, and supportive relationships with caring adults. Mentors are required for students who are completing an exhibition that will be used as a School-Wide Diploma Assessment. Often mentors are community members who are not faculty members or school staff.
Exhibition systems must also identify advisors to support students. Advisors are usually members of the school's faculty and staff who have been appointed by the school, or chosen by students, to monitor student progress throughout the exhibition process. Mentors and advisors will provide students with the opportunities, support, and guidance they require throughout their work. The roles of mentors and advisors are critical and training must be provided. Among other things, advisors and mentors must understand project requirements, timelines, their own responsibilities, and the responsibilities of their students.

Letter to Mentor
This is a sample letter to mentors from Barrington High School that you can modify to meet the needs of your school. It is important to reach out beyond the school community to recruit mentors who are willing to work with students. The process of recruiting mentors will help the community your school serves better understand both your school and your diploma system.
