Action with checkbox imageStudents Write Overall Reflection

Description

Students are required by RIDE to write a summative reflection on the work they choose for inclusion in their graduation portfolios. This reflection should include a description of how the work demonstrates the required proficiencies, how the work connects to their academic and career goals, and how the work represents them as a learner and as a person.

Things to Consider

Students will have practiced writing reflections since it is required that they write a short reflective piece for required or major entries. These short reflections will provide them with information and material to use in their summative reflection. They should be given prompts for the essay to guide them in their writing. Schools may require students to respond to more prompts than the state requires. The reflective piece should be evaluated for writing conventions using a rubric. Students may be required to share their reflections at an oral presentation before the review panel evaluates the graduation portfolio.

Required Components for Reflective Narrative

This list, written by the Rhode Island Department of Education contains the minimum requirements for a student's summative reflection piece. Schools should feel free to add additional elements, but may not remove elements from this list.

Remember to instruct students that the reflection is about the whole body of evidence, not about the individual entries.

Student Reflection Prompts

This is a list of sample reflection prompts generated by Ponaganset High School for their student reflection piece. Schools may also choose to use one or more of these prompts for each entry, or may wish to modify the prompts in this list to meet the needs of their system and students.
