step 14 Collect Data

It will be necessary to review data after your first class of students have graduated under the new RI Diploma System to ensure that the system is providing all students the opportunity to successfully complete their graduation portfolio. In order to review and revise the Portfolio system in your district, data on graduation rates, portfolio completion, data on monitoring student progress, and other sources of data will need to be examined and evaluated. Sources of data may include information from SALT surveys, locally developed and administered surveys, attendance and graduation data, and course taking patterns. It is important to use a variety of sources including both local and state data and to start collecting data as soon as your system is implemented.

All data must be disaggregated to ensure that all groups of students have multiple opportunities to successfully complete a variety of activities that can serve as entries in their graduation portfolio.

Data collection and analysis is necessary to make informed decisions about the success or need to improve or revise your graduation portfolio component of your high school diploma system. Students need multiple opportunities and appropriate instruction in order to gain the knowledge and skills needed to demonstrate proficiency which requires that the system is evaluated regularly to look for gaps in student achievement by subgroup.
