Safe
and Drug-Free Schools
The Rhode Island Safe and Drug-Free
Schools Program is a federally-funded initiative for reducing drug, alcohol and tobacco
use, and violence, through education and prevention activities in our Rhode Island
schools. It supports comprehensive prevention initiatives linked to whole school reform to
ensure that all schools will be free of drugs and violence and the unauthorized presence
of firearms and alcohol and offer a disciplined environment conducive to learning. These
initiatives are designed to prevent violence in and around schools, and strengthen
programs that prevent the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, involve parents, and
are coordinated with related federal, state and community efforts and resources.
