Experiment with Reading!

Posted by: Commissioner Deborah A. Gist on 6/30/2014

As we enter the beautiful summer months, students and families alike are looking forward to having some fun. Fortunately, there are a number of fun and educational opportunities available to them through the Summer Reading Program!

Each year, the Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) coordinates this statewide initiative to encourage Rhode Islanders to read. Fizz Boom Read is the program for our youngest readers, Spark a Reaction is designed for teens, and Literary Elements is for adults. Participants can sign up at their local library and gain access to a number of benefits, including

  • opportunities to socialize with other readers;
  • age-appropriate programs with artists and educators;
  • admission to cultural attractions all over the state.

During the next two months, 350 free programs and workshops will take place in our state's libraries. This year’s science-themed presentations include everything from the biology of sea creatures to the science of special effects.  These programs are a great way to keep students engaged in hands-on learning during the summer.

School might be on break until September, but learning never takes a vacation.  Your local library might just be the most exciting part of yours!
