Formative Assessment PD Online Modules

RIDE is building a professional development resource for Rhode Island educators on the formative assessment process.

Viewing the first two modules this year ensured that all faculty received a consistent message. The Community of Practice meetings provided us time to dive deeper into the big ideas, learning progressions, and success criteria. The unit plan template is excellent. - Kathy Almanzor, Jamestown

We are looking forward to expanding our Community of Practice… to the entire Barrington Professional Learning Community. Teachers involved in the pilot reported that the modules have supported important changes in instruction in their classrooms, framed in a deeper understanding of the learning progressions. In addition, using data from the formative assessments connected nicely to the RIDE data professional development and conversations around low-stakes data and instructional decision making.

- Paula Dillon, Barrington

The Formative Assessment Professional Development course is currently available to all Rhode Island educators through RIDEmap. To access the modules, please log into RIDEmap and select the blue Formative Assessment PD link on the right side of the page. If you do not have access, please contact your district or enter a helpdesk ticket.

Blended Learning
We are using a blended learning approach, which combines interactive online modules with facilitated Communities of Practice at the school level.  The online modules will include direct instruction, testimony from RI educators, video models of practice, assessments of learning, required readings, and extension activities.  Because the modules are available online, teachers do not have to take time away from their schools and can complete the course at their own pace, according to their own schedule.

Formative Modules

Piloted in RI
To capture video of Rhode Island educators engaged in learning the process of formative assessment, as well as to receive feedback on our course materials, RIDE conducted a pilot for this project in the winter of 2012.  It involved teams of educators from six schools around the state (3 elementary, 2 middle, 1 high school).  Participating schools represented urban, urban-ring, and suburban districts, as well as one charter school.

LEAs have some flexibility with when and how they implement the formative assessment professional development. However, we do offer a Sample Implementation Timeline which would allow participants to complete the online modules and Community of Practice meetings within one academic year.
