Mathematics

Students using colored tiles to solve math problemsMathematics education in Rhode Island is currently centered on the Mathematics Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) for Elementary and Middle Schools and the Grade Span Expectations (GSEs) for High Schools.

These expectations and the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) were developed with the New Hampshire and Vermont State Departments of Education in response to 2001's federally mandated No Child Left Behind Act.

They do not represent the full curriculum in mathematics, but rather serve as a framework upon which classroom instruction and assessment should be planned.  More in-depth information is available on the GLEs/GSEs & NECAP, as well as the transition to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and PARCC.

RIDE has adopted the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, which will be fully implemented in 2014.

Mathematics Science Partnerships Grant Applications

The Office of Instruction, Assessment, and Curriculum is pleased to announce that it will be accepting applications for the Mathematics Science Partnership grant, Enhancing Content Knowledge and Pedagogical Skill with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The terms of the grant require the establishment of a partnership between an LEA(s) and an Institute for Higher Education (IHE) with the intent of designing a professional development experience for mathematics educators in grades 3 to 5. The application period begins on August 25, 2014 and ends at 4:00 pm on September 30, 2014. RIDE will host a meet and greet session on Thursday, September 11 at 8:15 – 9:00 am for LEAs and IHEs to come together and explore the possibility of establishing a working partnership.
