Mathematics education in Rhode Island is guided by the expectations set forth in the Rhode Island Core Standards for Mathematics.

These standards were adopted in March 2021 and are informed by the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The Rhode Island Core Standards provide clear, consistent expectations about the knowledge, skills, and practices students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Educators should use a high-quality curriculum aligned to the standards to plan instruction and assessment. The RICAS assessment is used to measure Rhode Island students’ mathematics proficiency level. For information and resources related to RICAS, please go to the RICAS Assessments page on our website.

Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks

The Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks provides guidance around the implementation of the standards, particularly as it relates to the design and use of curriculum materials, instruction, and assessment.

The frameworks streamline a vertical application of standards and assessment across the K–12 continuum within Tier 1 of a Multi-Tier System of Support (MTSS), increase opportunities for all students, including multilingual learners and differently-abled, to meaningfully engage in grade-level work and tasks, and ultimately support educators and families in making decisions that prioritize the student experience. These uses of the curriculum frameworks align with RIDE’s overarching commitment to ensuring all students have access to high-quality curriculum and instruction that prepares students to meet their postsecondary goals.

Rhode Island’s list of approved high-quality curricula in mathematics was published in advance of the 2023 selection and adoption requirement for LEAs outlined in RIGL§ 16.22.30-33. The intent of this published list is to provide LEAs with the ability to choose a high-quality curriculum that best fits the needs of its students, teachers, and community. Each LEA must choose a curriculum from the list for core mathematics. When possible, LEAs should adopt early because every student in Rhode Island deserves access to high-quality curriculum materials. The list is found in Appendix B of the guidance document Selecting and Implementing a High-Quality Curriculum in RI.

In high school, the Rhode Island Core Standards for Mathematics (RICSM) are organized by conceptual category rather than by grade level. RIDE analyzed a variety of high-quality curricula and consulted with leading mathematics educators in Rhode Island to design model high school courses for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. The model courses outline the general content expectations for the traditional AGA sequence. The model courses and guidance in utilizing them can be found in in the high school section of the RICSM.

Rhode Island Mathematics Teachers Association (RIMTA)'s Elementary Math Leaders Group, a network of elementary mathematics leaders from throughout Rhode Island, created professional development materials and instructional resources to support six core topics in Visual Models Across the K-5 Common Core, each resource looks a little different in order to meet a variety of needs.

  • Number Sense
  • Place Value
  • Fractions, Number Lines
  • Tape Diagrams
  • Algorithms
