Resources & Options Brochure

The Resources & Options Brochure is available for families and school personnel to gain an understanding of the options for resolving special education issues. Before you file a complaint or other procedural request, take a moment and review this brochure. The Resources & Options Brochure is available in several languages and print and alternative formats are available; please contact us for a copy at 401-222-8987.

Families and schools have several options to assist them in resolving disagreements about special education services. If you need assistance with the option that is right for you the Office for Diverse Learners operates a Special Education Call Center during regular business hours to assist families and school district personnel with special questions, please contact us at 401-222-8999.

Mediation offers an opportunity for family members and the school department to meet with a state appointed mediator to attempt to resolve differences of opinion involving the education and educational services provided to a child with a disability. Mediation request may be made by calling Special Education Call Center at 401-222-8999 during regular business hours.

La mediación está diseñada para resolver los desacuerdos entre padres de familia y departamentos escolares de una manera cooperativa.  La mediación puede solicitarse con el Centro de Llamadas de la Oficina de Poblaciones Especiales, Departamento de Educación de Rhode Island (RIDE), teléfono 401-222-8999.
El Consorcio para la Resolución Apropiada de Disputas en la Educación Especial (en inglés The National Center on Dispute Resolution in Special Education o CADRE) promueve el uso de la mediación y otras estrategias de colaboración para resolver desacuerdos sobre la educación especial y los programas de intervención temprana. Please read the Resources & Options Brochure and the Special Education Complaint procedures document below before sending the form to be sure you are using the correct procedure for resolving your concern. Parent organizations are available to assist parents with questions and build their knowledge about Special Education and related services. Parents who know their rights can diplomatically advocate for their child with their local school district. ADA Technical Assistance Centers

The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) has established ten regional centers to provide information, training, and technical assistance to employers, people with disabilities, and other entities with responsibilities under the ADA. The centers act as a "one-stop" central, comprehensive resource on ADA issues in employment, public services, public accommodations, and communications. Each center works closely with local business, disability, governmental, rehabilitation, and other professional networks to provide ADA information and assistance. For information contact:
