RHODE ISLAND CONTENT STANDARDS

Enclosed are Rhode Island Adult Education Content Standards.  Currently, these standards consist of reading, mathematics, listening, and speaking.  Standards in writing, critical thinking/scientific inquiry, and technology are under development and will be piloted in the spring.

These standards were developed over a 2 year period and included the participation of 20 teachers and program directors.  The process was ably led by the expert team of Donna Curry, Andy Nash, and Amy Trawick, from the Center for Literacy Studies at the University of Tennessee.  Following a year of classroom implementation, piloting and refinement, the standards were approved by the Rhode Island Board of Regents in October of 2007 and are now available to adult educators in the state.

During the current program year, all adult education programs funded by the Office of Adult Education are expected to participate in a half-day workshop which provides an overview of the standards.  In the spring, approximately half of the programs will undergo content specific training with the remainder of programs to receive training in FY 09.
