National Assessment of Educational Progress

Introduction

Long considered the gold standard in test development, NAEP is the only assessment conducted in reading and mathematics in grades 4 and 8 across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Department of Defense schools. The NAEP standards, or frameworks, were designed with input from all states and jurisdictions that give the assessment. Once voluntary, states are now required to participate in all aspects of the reading and mathematics assessments at grades 4 & 8; which includes the pilot testing of items. Not all 4th and 8th grade schools in Rhode Island give the NAEP reading and mathematics assessments, but rather a sample of schools that represent Rhode Island's demographic characteristics is selected. Rhode Island has a long history of participating in NAEP, as do many states and as we developed Grade Level and Grade Span Expectations in various content areas and the New England Common Assessment Program, we drew heavily from the NAEP frameworks and test design. Below is information to assist this year's selected schools in preparing for NAEP as well as links to released NAEP test items, frameworks, and results.
