PSAT/NMSQT

The Preliminary-SAT (PSAT)/National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test (NMSQT) is a diagnostic assessment for all 10th and 11th grade students that gives them practice for the SAT and helps identify their academic strengths and weaknesses. This gives our students, their parents, and their teachers an understanding of the instructional focus they need in order to prepare for success in college. For these reasons, RIDE and the Governor's Office proposed that each public high school in Rhode Island test all 10th and 11th grade students.

Each student that participates will have access to an individual student score report, explanations for each test question and free access to MyRoad, the College Board’s career, major, and college-planning tool through www.collegeboard.com/psatextra. Each school will receive a school summary report that will be mailed within two months of the test administration date. Through a series of workshops, College Board staff will work with school leadership teams to promote the systematic use of the PSAT/NMSQT’s Summary of Answers and Skills and AP Potential Software. The Summary of Answers and Skills provides detailed information on the skills covered in each section of the PSAT/NMSQT, also showing how student’s skills compare to national and state performance on each skill assessed by the test.

Update for 2008-09 School Year:

The PSAT/NMSQT for grades 10 and 11 will not be paid for by RIDE this year due to budget cuts. Hopefully RIDE will be able to resume providing all 10th and 11th grade students with this opportunity the following year. The College Board will offer the following to schools wishing to continue to offer the PSAT/NMSQT:

  • The College Board will waive unused test fees
  • Provide district student-level data disks
  • Provide district Summary of Answers and Skills reports and district AP potential reports

Who to contact to Continue the PSAT:

If your school would like to continue to provide the PSAT, please contact David Adams at the College Board at dadams@collegeboard.org by May 5th.
