step 10 Support and Monitor Student Progress
Action with checkbox imageEnsure Multiple Opportunities for Students

Description

Schools implementing an exhibition system must identify the knowledge and skills students need for ultimate success. Beyond identifying critical knowledge and skills, schools need to undertake a thorough review of all course content and student course taking patterns to ensure that students are enrolled in courses that provide:

  • Multiple opportunities for instruction that is differentiated to meet each student's needs
  • Multiple assessments to measure the content knowledge and applied learning skills required

Things to Consider

Advisors, guidance counselors, or other responsible adults must monitor each student to make certain that he/she has access to the appropriate courses and is acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the exhibition system. Student learning must be assessed on an ongoing basis and well in advance of senior year for the system to be fair to all students. Ideally, both middle schools and elementary schools will begin identifying and teaching the skills necessary for students to enjoy continued success through all phases of their school careers and, ultimately, graduate under the Rhode Island Diploma System. An exhibition knowledge and skills mapping tool can be found in Step 2.

Exhibition Course Syllabus

The Rhode Island Skills Commission developed this overview of a capstone course syllabus. It is an example of one approach for designing and describing exhibition courses. It is offered only as an example; wholesale adoption is not appropriate.
