step 7 Develop Exhibition Documents and Materials

It is very important that students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members have a clear understanding of the demands and requirements of an exhibition. This will require schools to develop a large number of guidance materials in various forms. These guidance materials should include training packets and instructions for advisors, mentors, panel judges, parents and students. Most schools that have had experience with senior projects and capstone projects have developed handbooks that contain a wide variety of materials and information; these are often accessible on the schools' websites and can serve as effective examples.

Other important materials include (but are not limited to) timelines/calendars outlining "due dates" for various stages of the project, letters for communicating with various constituencies, consent forms, guidelines, waivers, rubrics, and PowerPoint presentations.

A careful, thorough, and thoughtful training and support infrastructure is critical to ensure fairness, understanding, consistency, and support for students and schools that chose exhibitions as their School-Wide Diploma Assessment.

Some students may be denied a diploma because they fail to successfully complete an exhibition. It is, therefore, critical to have in place clearly stated policies, procedures, and protocols that address issues such as:

  • Failure to meet deadlines
  • Plagiarism
  • Misrepresentation of fieldwork or product
