Action with checkbox imageEstablish Timeline for Implementation

Description

Schools need to establish timelines for implementation of their school wide assessment (graduation portfolio or exhibition) paying close attention to the timeline mandated by the Regents' regulations. The first major implementation deadline affects the class of 2008, but schools must remember that those students need adequate preparation to successfully complete their graduation portfolio or exhibition.

Things to Consider

In order to create a timeline that ensures that a school will be prepared for the 2008 deadline, schools should consider the following:

  • The time the school needs to revise Expectations for Student Learning or develop expectations if the school has not undergone a recent NEASC accreditation process (see Step 1 Setting Expectations for Student Learning)
  • The time the school needs to design and implement the School-Wide Diploma Assessment
  • Where and when students will have the time and opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete an exhibition or graduation portfolio
  • The opportunities students will need to collect, select, and reflect on entries for their graduation portfolio over the course of multiple years and/or
  • The time students will need to propose, implement, complete, and present an exhibition

Timeline for Rhode Island Diploma System

Use this timeline from RIDE's Technical Assistance Bulletin when designing your system and developing your school's timeline for implementation. This timeline is part of the New Diploma System Technical Assistance Bulletin that was released in February 2005. Be sure to pay attention to the major deadlines and remember that the class of 2008 will be the first to graduate under the new Rhode Island Diploma System.
