Description
Crucial decisions regarding the scope of a graduation portfolio, including which proficiencies will be demonstrated by successful completion of the portfolio, should not be made without placing the assessment in the context of the entire Rhode Island Diploma System. It is also necessary when designing a school's graduation portfolio system to incorporate the minimum state requirements for graduation portfolios, as well as any additional requirements to meet the school's Expectations for Student Learning.
Things to Consider
The three major components of a graduation portfolio (Expectations for Student Learning, entries, and review process) should be defined and described when making a decision regarding the scope of a school's graduation portfolio. The initial design process should include teachers from all content areas, guidance counselors, special education teachers, and students to ensure school-wide participation and responsibility for successful implementation. To ensure that the design incorporates all necessary components, it is suggested that someone take responsibility for organizing the process and that a checklist be used to guide the design process.

The Types of Entries for the Graduation Portfolio
The following descriptions of types of entries should be reviewed prior to the review of your curriculum for existing tasks for consideration for inclusion in a graduation portfolio. This list will also help to guide the development of the scope of entries that will be required for a graduation portfolio.
Remember that the collection of entries in the graduation portfolio must be aligned to the appropriate GSEs, applied learning standards, or other standards and requirements, as well as the school's Expectations for Student Learning.
