Description

It is important to answer the question "Who will do what?" early in the planning process. Be sure to identify and describe the roles and responsibilities of members of the school community who will be involved in developing, implementing, and monitoring graduation portfolios.

Things to Consider

Be sure to list all persons who will be involved in the planning process and later during implementation. Discuss with them what they think their role will be and use existing models to guide your descriptions. A graduation portfolio coordinator, while not required by the state, is important and highly recommended for the smooth implementation of a graduation portfolio system.

It is very important that the adults in the school are involved in the monitoring of student progress as they build their portfolios. The monitoring process should be the responsibility of advisors, guidance counselors, and classroom teachers.

Expectations For Common Task Specialists

This document was developed by the Rhode Island Skills Commission. It describes the role and responsibilities of a task specialist. In some schools the role of developing tasks will be the responsibility of classroom teachers. However, there should be one teacher who oversees or reviews the tasks that are developed in the school and this description of that teacher's role will serve as a guide for his or her responsibilities. The role of a task specialist with regard to developing, administering, scoring, and interpreting tasks is clearly defined within this document. Schools may modify this document to meet the needs of their specific graduation portfolio system.
