The RI Grade Span Expectations for Civics & Government and Historical Perspectives

The Grade Span Expectations (GSEs) for Civics & Government and Historical Perspectives were drafted in accordance with a Rhode Island statute mandating the implementation of civics education standards statewide in K-12 education.  The Civics GSEs were developed in the summer of 2006 by a team composed of educators from all grade spans, specialists from the Rhode Island Department of Education and the National Center for Assessment, and other professionals in the field (see the PowerPoint and other materials below for further details).  In addition to revisions based on review feedback, the Civics GSEs now have a glossary of terms and an appendix of suggested online resources for teachers and students.  The Civics GSEs were given final approval by the Board of Regents on December 10, 2008.

Questions about the Civics GSEs?  Please read the Frequently Asked Questions page.  If you have further questions that are not covered by the FAQ, please contact the Office of Instruction.

Please fill out the survey as completely and as accurately as possible.  The results will be collected and compiled anonymously by the RI Dept. of Education.  If you have any questions please contact Kamlyn Keith (kamlyn.keith@ride.ri.gov).  Thank you.

2009 Civics Summer Institute
Registration for this event has been closed as of Tuesday, June 23 at 8:00am as we have reached capacity.  This exciting opportunity for K-12 social studies, history, civics, and pre-service teachers will take place on June 25 and 26 at Providence College.  Workshops will cover a variety of topics – from how to use the Civics GSEs to specific topics in Rhode Island history, as well as resources in ready-made units that are aligned to the Civics GSEs - workshop details will be provided to participants as they sign in.  There will also be opportunities to network and to gather information about programs and resources that are available free of charge throughout our state, as well as browse the tables of textbook publishers, book sellers, and historical societies.

Sign-in (and continental breakfast) will begin at 8:00am each day in ’64 Hall (Slavin), and the conference will start promptly at 8:30am with the keynote address.  The keynote speaker for Thursday will be Peter Levine, Exec. Director of CIRCLE at Tufts University.  Adam Braver, Rhode Island author of November 22, 1963 and Mr. Lincoln’s Wars, will present the keynote on Friday.

The Rhode Island Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (RIASCD) is handling the registration for the Institute.  The registration fee is $15 for one day or $25 for both days (includes breakfast, lunch, free resources, and a commemorative - and practical! - bag).  Workshops are different on each day, so if you can't make one day, please come to the other.  Participants will also receive 7 professional development hours per day
