Informational Documents

Depth-of-Knowledge Levels

The Depth of Knowledge documents provide language to discuss concept complexity and learning.  Developed by Norman L. Webb, a senior research scientist with the Wisconsin Center for Education Research and the National Institute for Science Education, these tools have been used to make judgments about assessment items and standards (grade level and grade span expectations).

For each content area, Webb uses four levels to describe the complexity levels of tasks and student behaviors. Links to the descriptions for each content depth of knowledge level are provided below:
