Technology Planning Cycle
A technology plan passes through many
hands at the local, State and Federal
levels. Proper planning is necessary to
allow time for processing at each level
as well as ensure coverage at all times
to meet funding requirements. (Check
Tech Plan Status)
There are two main areas in the
Technology Plan cycle: 1) Plan creation
and approval and 2) Plan coverage. Plan
creation and approval includes writing
the plan, receiving local approval,
submitting the plan to RIDE for
approval, and receiving RIDE approval
and/or guidance. Plan coverage must be
no longer than THREE years in length
with coverage beginning July 1, the year
after the plan is
submitted to RIDE. This coincides with
ERATE funds beginning July 1 as a result
of Form 470 being filed the previous
September.
Consider the following scenario when
using the chart below in assisting you
in your planning. The district knows
that they have to have a Technology Plan
(Plan A) in place to ensure continued
coverage by the 2009/10 school year.
Planning, writing and receiving local
approval might occur during the 2007
school year. The district would then be
in a comfortable place to submit the
Technology “Plan A” to RIDE in September
of 2008 and wait their approval and/or
guidance. Technology “Plan A” would
then begin coverage in July of 2009 for
a three year period. [FY 2009 (School
Year 2009 / 2010), FY 2010 (School Year
2010 / 2011) and FY 2011 (School Year
2011 / 2012)]
During that three year period the
process would begin again… The district
knows that they have to have a
Technology Plan (Plan B) in place to
ensure continued coverage by the 2012/13
school year. Planning, writing and
receiving local approval might occur
during the 2010 school year. The
district would then be in a comfortable
place to submit the Technology “Plan B”
to RIDE in September of 2011 and wait
their approval and/or guidance.
Technology “Plan B” would then begin
coverage in July of 2012 for a three
year period. [FY 2012 (School Year 2012
/ 2013), FY 2013 (School Year 2013 /
2014) and FY 2014 (School Year 2014 /
2015)]
